Nearly every runner I know of who ran in the shoe (me included) developed arch blisters due to how narrow the midfoot was and how aggressively it tapered inward, just in front of the arch section.

This was excruciatingly bad for runners with flat arches and for most runners who had this arch issue, it was unusable for races or any important speed workouts.

When a brand develops a new shoe, they are supposed to do thousands of hours of testing with hundreds of runners who have different running styles and foot shapes. This was clearly not done when the Alphafly 2 was developed (or it was done but Nike chose not to listen to the feedback). The worst thing was that this was a $275 premium super shoe, the most expensive in the range.

When the original Alphafly launched in 2020, it was the only premium super shoe, priced at $275, $25 higher than the rest. Now, almost every brand has their own premium shoe, which demands an astronomical amount. The Adidas Prime X Strung comes in at even more than the Alphafly, at $300. This year’s Alphafly 3 (just like last year’s Vaporfly 3) has gone up by $10.

[caption id="attachment_45283" align="alignnone" width="2560"][/caption]

In the Nike racing range, the Vaporfly is far more popular than the Alphafly. The Vaporfly is cheaper, lighter, more comfortable and has a smoother ride.

Most runners (including elites) prefer to race in the simpler design of the Vaporfly however, last year, the 2 fastest marathon runners ever (Kipchoge and Kiptum) both chose to wear the Alphafly 3 to race in, both of them getting gold in those races.

When the Alphafly 3 was launched on 4 Jan 2024, it was sold out in seconds here on the Nike Malaysia official app. I managed to buy a pair a couple weeks later in Singapore at the new Nike flagship store grand opening. The global release of the next colourway is 4 April.

There wasn’t an Alphafly update in 2023, but this year we get a brand new, reworked Alphafly 3. It no longer has the decoupled forefoot but it still has the signature air pods. It weighs less at 218 g (7.7 oz) for a men’s US 9, compared to the previous version which was 9 g (0.3 oz) heavier. The “Next%” has also been dropped from the name which sounds cleaner and simpler.

[caption id="attachment_45264" align="alignnone" width="2560"][/caption]

The Alphafly 3 is a top-tier racer. It may not have the flare or the fun factor that other top-tier racers have but it's a firm, lightweight super shoe which delivers a snappy ride. It also has great versatility- it can be used for marathons & half marathons as well as shorter races like 5K’s/10K’s because of its firm ride.

What I like most about it is that it just disappears on my feet. It crushes long-distance runs and it allows me to lock into a pace with ease. It has great cushioning depth and the new upper is extremely comfortable. I’ll be racing a marathon in it this year for sure.

Version 3 is miles better than its predecessor: it’s lighter, smoother, more comfortable and it feels more springy thanks to the new air unit housing design and stiffer midsole. Version 3 is actually my favourite version to date because it has the widest midfoot and suits heel strikers more than the other versions.

It feels more polished than other versions, like a lot of thought and testing went into developing it.

The Alphafly 3’s biggest issue is its narrow midfoot which will still be a problem for some runners with low arches. The fact that I have to wear anti-blister tape whenever I do a long run in it is proof that it’s not perfect. No other super shoe that I’ve tried has this flaw.

[caption id="attachment_45286" align="alignnone" width="2560"][/caption]

It's also way too expensive. I definitely wouldn’t call the Alphafly 3 the pinnacle of racing shoes.

When compared to the Vaporfly 3, I prefer the Alphafly 3 because it feels more aggressive due to its firmer ride and more prominent forefoot rocker. It didn’t look very premium.

I decided to purchase it a half size up from my regular size because the Alphafly 2 was a little bit too snug, especially when I wore thick socks to protect my arches from blisters.

My first run was 25 kilometres, consisting of a 5 kilometre warm up, 10 kilometres steady and 10 kilometres tempo. The sizing was perfect and it fit me like a glove.

I could tell immediately that the poking arch sensation had been toned down and for the first 20 kilometres, I didn't feel anything at all. It’s a great all rounder; in other words, the whole is greater than the sum of all its parts.

[caption id="attachment_45285" align="alignnone" width="2560"][/caption]

This can also be said of the Vaporfly 3 but the main difference is in the air pods in the forefoot of the Alphafly which make it firmer and more responsive. When you pick up the pace, the air pods activate by adding extra thrust to the ride which isn’t there in the Vaporfly or any other super shoe.

In the 3rd version, the air pods have been integrated into the midsole, instead of sticking out. In all the other versions of the Alphafly, if you were a heel or midfoot striker, it felt like a chore to get over the air pods since the firm forefoot was decoupled from the rest of the midsole but in the Alphafly 3, this isn’t the case and ride transitions feel a lot smoother, more fluid. You can roll right from the heel, all the way to the forefoot with the new full ground contact outsole so transitions feel more natural.

The air pod section has also been improved by having more space around the air pods. If you have a look at online pictures of the construction, you can see a wider space in front of the airpods, so when they are loaded, they can expand and rebound more, allowing for greater energy return. The air pod section has been moved slightly back in the shoe, towards the midfoot. It moves the rocker further back and makes it more suitable for midfoot strikers.

[caption id="attachment_44423" align="alignnone" width="1920"][/caption]

When it comes to cushioning softness, the Alphafly 3 has a firm ride, one of the firmest of this year's super shoe releases. If you enjoy plush, squishy rides, this is one to avoid. I had initially put “firm ride” as one of the cons of the shoe but I think it’s the firm ride that makes it feel so aggressive and fast.

I really enjoy using it for a variety of runs including long runs, intervals, threshold runs and steady runs. It’s too firm for me for easy and recovery runs but it’s not designed for slow running. During uptempo runs, there’s a high level of speed assistance so it requires less effort to increase the pace.

The narrow midfoot and prominent arch have not given me any problems in version 3. My longest run was 35 kilometres and I didn’t experience any discomfort but I did use a strip of anti-blister tape on each of my arches for extra protection. The arch sensation is still there though and it feels like I’m wearing an old school stability trainer with a firm arch wedge. Flat-footed runners who have sensitive arches might still have issues in the Alphafly 3.

[caption id="attachment_45271" align="alignnone" width="2560"][/caption]

The midsole of the Alphafly 3 is much stiffer than its predecessors. In previous versions, a large portion of the carbon-fibre Flyplate was exposed under the midfoot, just before the air pods, allowing for a certain degree of flexibility. In version 3, the continuous bottom with more foam surrounding the plate results in a more rigid midsole with increased snappiness.

There’s a new Fast Shot rubber outsole which feels softer so landings are more padded and quieter. Outsole durability is an aspect that I've been impressed with although the forefoot has much more rubber coverage than the midfoot/rearfoot so forefoot strikers will get the best outsole durability. After 80 kilometres on the dot, I’ve noticed some minor scuffing on the exposed foam and some discoloration of the foam that comes into contact with the ground but neither affect the ride.

The Alphafly 3’s outsole is flatter than predecessors, so wear is distributed much better. The scooped centre of the rearfoot doesn't scrape the ground so much anymore. I’ve had no issues with traction so far but I haven’t tried it in the rain. I don’t expect it to struggle though because there are nubs which protrude on the forefoot section.

If you don’t have sensitive arches and you enjoy firmer riding super shoes, the Alphafly 3 is a good choice.

<picture class="progressive-picture" style="max-width:1920px;"></picture>

When it comes to cushioning softness, the Alphafly 3 has a firm ride, one of the firmest of this year’s super shoe releases.

<picture class="progressive-picture" style="max-width:2560px;"></picture>

The midsole of the Alphafly 3 is much stiffer than its predecessors. In previous versions, a large portion of the carbon-fibre Flyplate was exposed under the midfoot, just before the air pods, allowing for a certain degree of flexibility. In version 3, the continuous bottom with more foam surrounding the plate results in a more rigid midsole with increased snappiness.

There’s a new Fast Shot rubber outsole which feels softer so landings are more padded and quieter. Outsole durability is an aspect that I’ve been impressed with although the forefoot has much more rubber coverage than the midfoot/rearfoot so forefoot strikers will get the best outsole durability. After 80 kilometres on the dot, I’ve noticed some minor scuffing on the exposed foam and some discoloration of the foam that comes into contact with the ground but neither affect the ride.

The Alphafly 3’s outsole is flatter than predecessors, so wear is distributed much better. The scooped centre of the rearfoot doesn’t scrape the ground so much anymore. I’ve had no issues with traction so far but I haven’t tried it in the rain. I don’t expect it to struggle though because there are nubs which protrude on the forefoot section.

<picture class="progressive-picture" style="max-width:2560px;"></picture>

The new Atomknit 3.0 upper is a vast improvement over the previous version with the heel lockdown issue being addressed. It may not have the flare or the fun factor that other top-tier racers have but it’s a firm, lightweight super shoe which delivers a snappy ride.

Nike has been using Kipchoge, their most powerful marketing weapon to push sales of their most expensive racing shoe since its conception and it’s been very effective.

Over the past year, Nike has strategically “leaked” photos of the Alphafly 2. Pictures of Eliud wearing prototypes of it in training sessions in Kenya have been circulating on social media channels and creating additional hype for one of the most anticipated running shoe launches of the year.

The Prototype colourway of the Alphafly Next% 2 sold out within minutes in selected countries and sold out wherever it was launched. I was lucky enough to grab a pair of the rare colourway but it was a stressful morning, waiting for the drop on the Nike app.

[caption id="attachment_38162" align="alignnone" width="1440"] picture of Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next 2[/caption]

The Prototype colourway is made to look like a pre-production version, with minimal colours. It also has numbers printed on the midsole which are made to look like a human wrote them with a permanent marker, to decipher which wear test version it is.

Even though the Alphafly is one of the more popular super shoes, it isn’t as popular as the other Nike super shoe, the Vaporfly.

This is due to 2 main reasons:

it costs $25 more,

it has a narrow midfoot which pokes into your arch.

Some runners, especially those with wide, flat feet find it uncomfortable. With the first 2 versions, the prominent arch was noticeable but bearable for me.

The Alphafly Next% 2 is actually the third version of the Alphafly series. The second version was the environmentally friendly Alphafly Next Nature which I reviewed last year. I found the Next Nature version to have a firmer ride than the original and it had a more relaxed upper, however, its astronomical price and its heavy, trainer-like weight didn’t make any sense.

The Alphafly Next% 2 is heavier than the original version at 8 oz (227 g) for a men's US 9. The original was 7.4 oz (210 g) and the Next Nature was 9.2 oz (261 g). It also has an 8 mm drop compared to the original and the Next Nature versions which had a 4 mm drop. It maintains the same price as the original version, $275.

Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next% 2 First Impressions

[caption id="attachment_38174" align="alignnone" width="1440"] picture of Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next 2[/caption]

The first time that I saw the “leaked” images of the Alphafly 2, I was stoked to see that it was a complete overhaul: new outsole, midsole and upper. The extra layer of foam underneath the air pods looked like it would provide a softer ride than previous versions which would be a welcome change.

When I laced it up and walked around in it for the first time, I could feel the prominent arch against my midfoot which felt uncomfortable. This is a trademark of the Alphafly because its midfoot is so narrow. Normally the poking arch sensation doesn't bother me during runs.

My first run was a speed workout consisting of 500 m intervals followed by 200 m intervals. The first thing that I noticed was how much quieter it sounded than the last 2 versions. You no longer sound like a galloping horse when wearing the Alphafly Next% 2. This is due to the new, extra layer of ZoomX situated under the Zoom Air pods.

The ride felt surprisingly firmer than the original version and slightly firmer than the Next Nature version. The workout felt great and I was able to reach top speeds of around 3 minutes 30 seconds per km (5:38 mins per mile) effortlessly.

My second run in the Alphafly 2 wasn't as positive as the first fun. It was a moderately paced run, so I was landing further back in the shoe during transitions. Throughout the run, the narrow midfoot was creating an uncomfortable hotspot against the arch of my left foot.

I desperately wanted to turn back and get the shoes off as soon as possible. When I got back home and took it off, there was a blister on my arch from all the friction. I was wearing medium-thick socks and this was never a problem for me in the first 2 versions.

Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next% 2 Sole Unit

[caption id="attachment_38163" align="alignnone" width="1440"] picture of Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next 2[/caption]

The Alphafly 2 doesn't feel as squishy or bouncy as the original version. I prefer using it for speed workouts or tempo sessions whereas the original version felt much more comfortable for easy paces.

I have a hunch that Nike changed the formulation of ZoomX to make it firmer and more durable because there aren't any other noticeable changes which would result in a firmer ride. I feel like the Alphafly 2 isn’t using ZoomX to its full potential with such a firm ride. It’s supposed to feel springy, bouncy, and lively.

The Alphafly 2 has a firmer ride than most super shoes. The Metaspeed Sky+, Vaporfly Next% 2 and Adios Pro 3 all have softer rides and when running in the Alphafly 2, I crave the pleasant ZoomX squish that I get in other top tier Nike running shoes.

It takes a while to learn how to run in the Alphafly 2 effectively. It encourages you to “stomp the ground.” When I load up the shoe, I can feel the powerful Zoom Air units in the forefoot respond and propel me forward which I don't feel when I'm running lightly on my feet. Heavier runners won't need to load up the shoe as much because the Zoom Air units will compress naturally.

[caption id="attachment_38161" align="alignnone" width="1440"] picture of Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next 2[/caption]

The Alphafly has the same high toe-spring as the first two versions, offering a highly efficient and energy-saving rockered ride, especially during longer efforts. It’s easy to get into a rhythm and rack up miles without putting in as much effort.

The narrow midfoot is a problem and the Alphafly 2’s biggest weakness. If Nike just made the waist of the shoe a couple mm wider, it would be suitable for a much wider audience.

I had to wear really thick, blister resistant socks to protect my arch but I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing the Alphafly for long-distance marathon runs. I'm lucky because I have narrow feet but I can imagine that flat-footed runners with wide feet will find running in the Alphafly 2 like running in some kind of torture device.

The carbon plate in the midsole of the Alphafly is stiff but it doesn’t dip down at the forefoot like the Vaporfly’s plate does because the Air Zoom units are in the way so the Alphafly 2’s plate has a much flatter profile and doesn’t feel as aggressive. It lacks the punch that other super shoes such as the Vaporfly Next% 2 and the original Metaspeed Sky have.

[caption id="attachment_38166" align="alignnone" width="1440"] picture of Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next 2[/caption]

Stability has been improved as a result of the ride being firmer. It also has a wider heel than previous versions so going around tight corners and making U turns is no problem in the Alphafly 2.

The outsole is an improvement over the previous 2 versions. The rubber strips covering the rear foot now extend further towards the midfoot so there is less exposed midsole foam in the midfoot. The forefoot rubber is also flat now compared to the ribbed forefoot rubber on the earlier versions so wear is spread more evenly.

A “V” shaped cavity exposes the carbon plate under the midfoot. This is also a new weight-saving feature which wasn't present before.

I expect the Alphafly 2 to have good durability compared to other super shoes because it doesn't have many midsole foam areas which come into contact with the ground during transitions. After my testing period, I've seen only small amounts of wear on the lips of the decoupled groove and on the edges of the diamond-shaped hole in the forefoot.

Grip is fantastic in the Alphafly 2, even though it doesn’t have a full ground contact outsole. I had no issues with traction in wet conditions.

Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next% 2 Upper Unit

[caption id="attachment_38171" align="alignnone" width="1440"] picture of Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next 2[/caption]

Atomknit 2 is the new upper material but it's almost exactly the same and isn't more breathable than Atomknit 1 on the original Alphafly. It’s still a very cool, highly breathable upper which doesn’t absorb liquid.

It still has a bootie construction and I’m not a big fan of bootie constructions on racing shoes because it doesn’t provide great foot lockdown. You can't use a runner's knot so during workout runs when I was sprinting, I noticed that the heel was loose but not so bad that there was heel slippage.

The padding on the inside of the heel counter is not as plump as in the last 2 versions so there is more space between my heel and the heel counter- this is the main cause of the loose heel problem.

[caption id="attachment_38172" align="alignnone" width="1440"] picture of Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next 2[/caption]

The lacing area is thicker and more padded on this version, so the top of your foot has more protection from lacing pressure.

The Alphafly 2 has a narrower, snugger fit than version 1 especially at the midfoot and forefoot so I find version 1 and 2 more comfortable. It fits me true to size but I have narrow, low volume feet. I recommend going a half size up if you're between sizes or if you have high volume feet.

Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next 2 Conclusion

[caption id="attachment_38175" align="alignnone" width="1440"] picture of Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next 2[/caption]

Nike really doesn’t like runners with flat arches. The Infinity Run 3 and the Alphafly Next% 2 are the 2 neutral shoes with the most significant arch-poking sensations of all the running shoes on the market.

If you don’t have narrow feet or high arches, I wouldn’t recommend the Alphafly 2 to you because the narrow midfoot becomes extremely uncomfortable on long runs. The Alphafly Next% 2 just didn’t work for me. I never got used to the poking-arch sensation and I couldn’t wait to take it off after every run.

Compared to the original Alphafly Next% and the Next Nature version, the Alphafly Next% 2 is firmer and more stable but it has lost some bounce and energy return so it doesn’t have as much long-distance comfort. It also has a snugger, more narrow-fitting upper so you might need to size up.

Given the choice, I’d pick the original Alphafly Next% because I prefer a softer, more lively ride. The new version doesn’t have that pleasing squish during footstrikes and that high energy return on toe-offs. The only things that I like about the update are that it has a quieter ride due to the layer of foam underneath the air pods, that it is more durable and more stable.

In my opinion, the Alphafly Next% 2 is not a good update. Nike only needed to change one thing and to make the midfoot wider which they failed to do. At $275, it’s still one of the most expensive running shoes and I definitely wouldn’t buy it again.

There are plenty of other, cheaper super shoes which are more comfortable, lighter and more fun to run in.

As editorial policy, we do not accept free samples from companies.
We purchased this pair of Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next 2 at Running Warehouse with our own money.

Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next% 2 Review
The Nike Alphafly Next% 2 is a super shoe which was designed for narrow-footed runners and runners with high arches because it has a very narrow midfoot.
